This is my first book review, and one that I am very passionate about! The Hunger Games trilogy is one of my favourites. Not only is the storyline enthralling, Suzanne Collins has written it perfectly. I hugely admire her. However this review will focus only on the first book in the amazing trilogy.
For those of you who don't know, The Hunger Games is set in a future North America. It has been seperated into 12 districts, each with their own trading speciality. To make sure that every resident in Panem understands that the Capitol has complete control over them, they created a reality TV show where one girl and one boy from each district are forced to fight to the death in an arena. Only one can survive.
Katniss Everdeen, a 16 year old from District 12 loves hunting with her best friend Gale Hawthorne, but after volunteering to take the place of her younger sister Primrose in the Hunger Games, she finds herself having to hunt fellow children.
I will not give away the rest of the plotline, but I assure you that you will not be dissapointed. So much happens within the 451 pages of the book.
Katniss is described so well within the book that you begin to feel that you have known her for years. She is a stong - willed, determined and independent which makes her a very believable character. Her relationship with Peeta Mallark is slightly confusing though. Some parts make you believe that she is just leading him on to win sponsors and survive, but at times you think that she geniunely loves him. Suzanne Collins has cleverly written it so that to find out more about their relationship, you must read the rest of the trilogy.
I strongly disagree that it is only enjoyed by girl's. I cannot think of a more versatile book. To balance out the love triangle aspect of the story, there is heaps of action packed into this book. There is part of it that appeals to everyone. The action scenes of the actual Games are described amazingly. Every death and every injury makes the reader gasp and mourn, or in some cases, be glad.
For every review, I will give it a rating out of 5 in three areas.
Excitement/Enjoyment: 5/5
Writing technique: 5/5
Overall rating: 5/5
